Signs your home needs rewiring

You don't always need a full rewire, but you should get the installation checked if you notice any of the following:

• Black rubber, fabric-covered or lead-sheathed cables at the fuse box or light fittings
• An old fuse box with rewireable fuses and no RCD protection
• Round-pin sockets, or sockets and switches mounted on skirting boards
• Scorch marks, buzzing, flickering lights or sockets that feel warm
• Too few sockets, so the house relies on extension leads
• An electrical report (EICR) with C1 or C2 codes that point to the wiring itself

If you're not sure, an EICR inspection is the best first step. It tells you exactly what condition the wiring is in and whether a rewire, a partial rewire or a few targeted repairs are the right answer.

Full rewire or part rewire?

A full rewire replaces every circuit in the property, usually with a new consumer unit. It makes sense when the existing cables are old, damaged or undersized throughout, or when you are renovating and the floors and walls are already open.

A part rewire replaces selected circuits, for example a kitchen during a refit, a loft conversion or an extension. We test the circuits that stay to make sure the new and old work together safely. Many part rewires are paired with a consumer unit upgrade so every circuit gets modern RCD protection.

How house rewiring in Leicestershire works with us

1. Survey and quote. We visit, look at the existing installation and talk through what you need now and in future: extra sockets, outside power, lighting, data points or an EV charger.
2. First fix. We lift floorboards and chase walls to run new cables, back boxes and circuits, working room by room to keep disruption down.
3. Making good. Chases are filled ready for your plasterer or decorator. We can recommend local trades if you need them.
4. Second fix. Sockets, switches, lights and the consumer unit are fitted and connected.
5. Testing and certification. Every circuit is tested, the work is notified under Part P through our NICEIC registration, and you receive your certificates.

A typical three-bedroom house takes around a week, depending on access and the size of the property. It is usually possible to keep some power on each evening while the work is under way.

Certified to current regulations

Rewiring is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NICEIC registered contractor we can self-certify, so you don't need a separate building control application. Keep your certificates safe: buyers' solicitors ask for them when you sell, and insurers may ask for them after a claim.
