What's involved in an EV charger installation?
- Survey. We check the incoming supply and main fuse, work out the maximum demand of the house and look at the earthing arrangement. We also agree where the charger and cable will go.
- Protection. The charger gets its own circuit with the correct RCD protection. If your consumer unit has no spare way or is out of date, we may recommend a consumer unit upgrade first.
- Installation. The charger is mounted and the cable run neatly, with outdoor-rated cable and glands where it runs outside.
- Commissioning. We connect the charger to its app, set up load management if needed, test the circuit and show you how everything works.
- Certification. You get an Electrical Installation Certificate, and the work is notified under Part P.
Home EV chargers
Most home chargers are rated at 7kW on a normal single-phase supply, which adds roughly 25 to 30 miles of range per hour. That is plenty to fully charge most cars overnight. New chargers must be "smart" under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, so you can schedule charging for off-peak hours through an app.
We can fit tethered chargers with a built-in cable or untethered units with a socket, and we'll help you choose one that suits your car, driveway and budget.
Workplace and commercial charging
For businesses, landlords and blocks of flats we install multiple chargers with load balancing, so several cars can charge without overloading the supply. How long does EV charger installation in Leicestershire take?
A standard home charger installation usually takes half a day to a day. Longer cable runs, groundworks or a consumer unit upgrade can add time, and we confirm this at the survey.
Can I charge an electric car from a normal plug?
You can use a three-pin plug occasionally, but it is slow and puts a heavy continuous load on a socket that was not designed for it. A dedicated charger on its own protected circuit is safer and much faster.
Do I need a new consumer unit for an EV charger?
Not always. If your board has a spare way and suitable protection we can use it. Older boards without RCD protection, or with no room, usually need upgrading first.
Can you install a charger if I do not have a driveway?
The charger has to be on your property with safe off-street parking. Running cables across a pavement is not allowed without council permission. We can advise on your options at the survey.
